Moose sneaking up on us at Nanuk.

The colours are changing from vibrant greens to reds, yellows and oranges. Nights are getting cooler and the days are becoming shorter. And the truest sign that fall has arrived at Nanuk Polar Bear Lodge? Our first moose sighting of the season on the Hudson Bay Odyssey!

Just as dessert was being served a few evenings ago, our assistant chef Keanna spotted a cow just west of the lodge. It was nervous, and with their heightened hearing and sense of smell, we were all sure to be very quiet. We limited our movements in hopes that it would approach the lodge closer, and what a view we had! The moose walked by the front of the lodge with a beautiful sunset in the background, right up on to the runway, and guests were able to snap some fantastic photos.

Nanuk Polar Bear Lodge is situated on the edge of the boreal forest, and the Moose begin to emerge from the forest and on to the coast in early fall, as the temperatures begin to drop and the first frosts make their appearance.

The males go into what is called the “rut” or mating season, and bulls can be found in large concentrations at this time. After the rut, typically around mid-November, the moose will move back into the forest, where they seek shelter and food for the long winter season ahead.

Right now, they’re our wild and welcome four-legged guests.
